Jesus stood up in the Synagogue in Nazareth at the beginning of His ministry and quoted the prophet Isaiah, saying “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD” and he closed the Book and said “Today this is fulfilled in your ears.”(Luke4:18-21) Here was the beginning of evangelism.
Through out Christ’s ministry he went forward demonstrating that the Kingdom of GOD had come to man. Not only did he preach the Gospel of the Kingdom, he taught and demonstrated to His disciples the methods of evangelism. This was His school of Evangelism and His followers were the pupils. Just prior to His assention Jesus gave the Great Commission to make Disciples of all Nations.(Matt28:18-20) This Commission surely wasn’t fulfilled to completion by the 1st century Church, nor has it been fulfilled by the Church of today. It is evident that the Charge given by Christ is to every believer. Just as light penetrates the places it is exposed to, so the Christian is to shine the Gospel light in their places of influence. This is the method of fulfilling the Great commission. It is the role of the Prophet, Evangelists, Pastors and Teachers to equip the saints and arm them with the Good News of Christ so that they can spread the Light in Dark places.
